Sun Valley…for those who know it, just hearing the name likely brings a smile to one’s face and a wave of unforgettable memories. Idaho is a place offering a lifetime of explorations- having lived there for almost ten years, we barely scratched the surface of all the Gem State has to offer.
I was lucky enough to spend my 35th birthday in Sun Valley this year as we celebrated the marriage of two dear friends. As if experiencing The Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch for the first time wasn’t enough, I had the opportunity to teach a wedding day yoga class to folks who traveled from Florida to California, and everywhere in between. We spent the morning saluting the Sawtooths, flipping our dogs, and getting lost in meditation. The experience was surreal on so many levels.
On the morning of my birthday, I woke up with a plan. I was going to do 35 sun salutations in honor of my 35th birthday. It was a mere 18 degrees out but the warm Idaho sun (and the thought of coffee and veggie cakes from the Stanley Bakery) left me feeling fearless and energized, so I rolled out my mat and got started.
Perhaps it was exhilaration from watching the sun first hit the eastern slopes of the Sawtooths, but I had an aha moment. This challenge was such a good one, I decided it had to be shared. And I knew just how to do that. I was going to initiate a challenge for my upcoming yoga series class.
Today brought the first class in a five week series with some of my favorite little yogis, and for the first time I gave my students “Om work.” What’s that you ask? Yep, Yoga homework. Their “Om work” for this week is to do as many sun salutations per day as their age, every day this week. This is a variation on the challenge I gave myself, which tied in so well to our class today and gave the kids a way to keep working on the goals that they set for themselves. I can’t wait to see them next week…stronger, taller, and more grounded!
Please join us in the challenge! Sun Salutations can be an exhilarating way to start your day or an energizing way to take a mid-day break. Try something new, get your littlest yogi’s onboard, and most of all have fun with it. Post a picture if you want and tag yourself on instagram @growing_grounded. (If you need to know what a sun salutations looks like, I can send you a video!)
Thanks for being a part of this!
