There have been a handful of time in the past few weeks when I have found myself speaking to Moms groups, educators, Meditation students, and even friends about the importance of self-care. This morning, I decided to put my own advice into practice and ask myself the necessary question, “What do I really need today?”
We often think of self care as a simple indulgence- a pedicure or massage, a shopping spree, or even just a latte from the coffee shop. While always enjoyable, these things are temporary. Self-care is more about what you need in that given moment to cultivate long term wellness within yourself. As we begin to practice this more and more, these moments of giving ourselves what we need turn into habits and intentions, and lay the groundwork for giving ourselves what we need so we can ultimately take care of others.
This past week has been a particularly hard one, so I took the morning to read, meditate, and take a long walk. I fought the urge to go for a run or go to yoga, or even run errands and take care of business, because my body was telling me what I needed. And today, I committed to listening.
I read the first few chapter in the book “Positivity” by Barbara Fredrickson. The book dives directly into the science between the brain and positive thinking, and the effect it can have on your overall well being. It explained the difference in heartfelt positive thinking and a fake smile (we all know the type), and really got me thinking about cultivating positivity. When you set out to seek this, creativity and happiness are born, and doors open. I stumbled across this because I was practicing self care- everything comes full circle.
I encourage you to think about self care next time you feel the storm coming, and give yourself whatever it is that you need to genuinely take care.
