Meditation has become part of my daily practice in the past few years, although some days it seems easier than others. As with most things, there is always an excuse that inhibits me from the practice- don’t have time, don’t have the space, don’t feel like it, etc.
I have taken to The Daily Stoic, by Ryan Holiday, which offers quick daily meditations that prompt you in creating your Mindset for the day. This morning I opened up to June 27h and was struck with how relevant today’s message was for me. It was titled “Adversity Reveals” and in short, it touches on the idea that how you handle anything, even minor adversity, might seem like nothing but it in fact reveals everything. It stopped me in my tracks. I spent a few moments reflecting and realized how much room I have for growth in this moment.
The truth is, we are all faced with adversity. It is an undeniable part of life. As I told the Juniors at Atlanta International School during their last week of school, adversity allows us to grow our resilience muscles; the muscles that allow us to bounce back when things are hard, and persevere when it would be easy to quit. Life will always have joy and sorrow, that may not change, but what can change is how we react.
Today and tomorrow, and everyday moving forward, take a look at what you are facing and remember that adversity is simply an invitation and an opportunity to grow.
