It takes a little slow to grow....

I recently had coffee with a dear friend of mine, one who I consider to be a mentor and influencer in many aspects of Growing Grounded, and someone whose opinion I value greatly. We talk about our one, five, and ten year goals, we swap articles and podcasts about topics we find interesting, and we dream big about what’s next. We also have real talk about the behind the scenes that comes with owning a small business - which is much more than just flexible schedule and autonomy over decisions!

An underlying theme that continues to pop up revolves around prioritizing. FYI- there is no better way to watch an entire day slip away, without getting anything done on your to do list, than by having a newborn! While prioritizing looks a bit different to me today than it did even just a few weeks ago, having a clear picture and outline of what needs to happen in a given day is critical.

To me, three is the magic number- coming up with three “things”- events, activities, to do’s, etc. to get done in a day is manageable and attainable, without being overwhelming. And let’s face it, there is no better feeling of completion than marking off the to do list and taking steps towards bigger goals. Every time we take a baby step, we are that much closer to climbing the mountain. Studies are showing that the habits of the most highly successful people include, you guessed it, baby steps. I have always loved the saying, “It takes a little slow to grow.” And in a world where instant gratification is at our fingertips, (thank you google, Siri, and Amazon to name a few) patience takes practice. It’s a muscle we have to work out and cultivate- add this to your to do list!

I have worked with clients in the past who come to me with a list a mile long of things they want to see happen...quickly. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE seeing clients with goals, but I also love seeing client success stories. And the correlation between more goals and more success aren’t always on the same plane.

As you think about your day, week, or your month, think about the baby steps you can take that move you closer to your goal. Set three goals for today and tomorrow and when all is said and done, check-in with yourself. How does feel to accomplish these things? This is taking small steps in the right direction, and this is how change happens.

My three steps for today?

Write a blog post, have dinner as a family, and prioritize sleep for everyone.
